Q:

Can you please explain the difference between "Failure Modes, Effects and Diagnostics Anaysis" and "IEC 610508 Functional Safety Assessment"?

A:

Both documents seem similar, but when you click “Certificates” on your webiste the IEC 61508 Functional Safety Assessment is often the document that is provided. An FMEDA is an analysis of the hardware of a product based on the design, the chosen environment and any proposed (or real) automatic diagnostics.  The result is a report showing random failure rates for each failure mode, useful life and if applicable, a metric called “safe failure fraction.”  An FMEDA analysis fulfills some of the requirements for IEC 61508 certification.

The exida Functional Safety Assessment is an evaluation of ALL applicable requirements of IEC 61508.  The FMEDA analysis is a part of the evidence evaluated.  Other evidence includes a detailed audit of the design process including electronic hardware, mechanical hardware and software.  The evaluation considers design quality management, design documentation, testing process, user safety documentation, and manufacturing quality.
