When I went to set my goals for 2019, I set both personal and professional goals. One of my professional goals is to clean off my desk, but another is to get more people to think about functional safety before an accident occurs, instead of when they are normally thought of…after.
Unfortunately, even after the adoption of IEC 61508 and IEC 61511, we still see process safety accidents.
Even after these accidents occur, we still get asked why we need Safety Systems. It is simple: it is to prevent serious and potentially deadly disasters. At the end of the day, it’s about reducing personnel, environmental, and financial risk.
Take a moment and think about your functional safety, and if you are happy with where you currently stand with safety. Start to think about safety beforean accident happens to one of your competitors, or even worse…you.
