exida Presenting and Exhibiting at 2014 Emerson Global User Exchange

  September 10, 2014

Emerson Exchange

exida will be exhibiting and presenting at the 2014 Emerson Global User Exchange October 6-10, 2014 in Orlando, FL. Stop by Booth #323 during exhibit hours.  Also, Dr. William Goble, Principal Partner and Todd Stauffer, exida Director of Alarm Management are among the presenters at this year’s event.  Please see below for the complete schedule of exida involved presentations.

2-1896 - Improve SIL Verification with the New 2H Approach per IEC 61508 (45 minutes)

Any SIF design requires users to meet three distinct requirements – Systematic Capability, SIL Probability of Failure on Demand, and Architectural Constraints. Adding Type A devices (simple devices, such as remote seals and primary elements) to Type B devices (smart, microprocessor based) can require redundancy in SIL 2 applications per 1H architectural constraints. With the 2010 version of the IEC 61508 standard, users can take advantage of the 2H approach to eliminate architectural constraints, reducing redundancy requirements. This paper will explain the new 2H approach and its benefits.

MTE-2545 - DeltaV SIS Safety System Lifecycle Management (90 minutes)

On this open discussion forum, we will explore relevant topics concerning the management of a Safety Instrumented System through the entire safety lifecycle including:

  • Proof testing and IEC61511 compliance
  • Expansions and modifications of existing SIS
  • Cybersecurity on SIS

You will have an opportunity to pose questions and participate in the discussion on the real issues related the management of the lifecycle of Safety Instrumented Systems.

1-2272 - Alarm Management – What’s Your Philosophy? (45 minutes)

Creation of an alarm philosophy document (APD) is one of the first steps in establishing an effective alarm management program. It is also a requirement of the ISA-18.2 alarm management standard. This presentation discusses how Flint Hills Resources – Renewables created an APD that applies across multiple sites, for different control systems, and positions them for migration to DeltaV. It will discuss goals, the development process, key success factors and the unique alarm system requirements that needed to be met. It will also show how the APD guided the team through alarm rationalization.

7-1777 - Increase the IQ of your DeltaV System by adding Smart Alarming (45 minutes)

Designed suppression (aka “Smart Alarming”) is an effective way to ensure that alarms are presented to the operator only when they are relevant and useful. This session will discuss how to go from definition of smart alarming modules in exida’s SILAlarm rationalization tool directly to Deltav configuration using Bulk Edit. Co-designed by Emerson and exida, these modules are backward compatible to DeltaV v11 and require no changes to existing control modules.

MTE-2544 - DeltaV Alarm Management (90 minutes)

Modern control systems make it easy to add alarms without significant effort, cost, or consideration for whether they are truly needed. This has led to alarm system performance issues such as nuisance alarms, alarm floods, incorrectly prioritized alarms, alarms that are irrelevant based on plant state, and alarm overload, all of which impact the operator’s ability to do their job.

This workshop will discuss how to apply alarm management best practices, taken from the ISA-18.2 standard and EEMUA 191 guideline, to a DeltaV system. It will show how to identify alarm management issues using DeltaV Analyze and solve them using tools such as exida’s SILAlarm, DeltaV Alarm Help, conditional alarming, dynamic alarming and alarm shelving. It will cover tips for executing a successful alarm rationalization project using SILAlarm as well as how to configure DeltaV alarms, Alarm Help and dynamic alarming modules directly from the results of rationalization. It will also cover application tips for some of the new alarm management features in DeltaV v13 and customization of DeltaV Analyze reports using the SyTech XLReporter.

Attendees are encouraged to bring their own alarm management issues and challenges for discussion.
