exida will be presenting and exhibiting at the 2015 Emerson Global User Exchange to be held October 12-16, 2015 in Denver, CO. Stop by Booth #306 during exhibit hours. Also, Dr. William Goble, exida Principal Partner and Todd Stauffer, exida Director of Alarm Management are among the presenters at this year’s event.
Any safety instrumented function (SIF) must meet three distinct requirements: Systematic Capability, Probability of Failure, and Architectural Constraints. These three requirements insure proper safety integrity levels (SIL) are achieved. Adding Type A devices (simple devices) to Type B devices (smart, microprocessor based devices) can require redundancy in SIL 2 applications per architectural constraints. With the 2nd edition of IEC 61508 standard, users can take advantage of another approach to eliminate architectural constraints to reduce redundancy requirements.

In the throes of tedious alarm rationalization sessions, participants can sometimes be challenged to set useful alarm limits. This project used Exida’s SILAlarm® Alarm Management software to extract process alarms configured in a running DeltaV system. The resulting database could then be parsed for tags and used to extract and analyze years of data from the plant’s process historian. Limits of the practical “operating envelope” were then uploaded to the SILAlarm database. This knowledge allowed specialists to set limits knowing their likely impact on the alarm load.
